RAKE AND DESTROY! (and lopsided knitting)

I am discovering knitting is much easier than I first imagined which is a really good thing since I will have to start making my own clothes two sizes larger after a week of my Momma’s cooking. I am still only working with the actual knitting stitch but I just finished a loosely stitched, slightly lopsided washcloth/dishrag/dust rag for my boyfriend, Steve. Check out the picture below. I am quite proud! My next project will be either a scarf or a hand towel. Whichever I have enough yarn for.

In other news today, according to www.themarthablog.com Martha was lamenting about how the leaves on her trees were not so vibrant this fall because of “tar spot fungus and various mildew problems”. Of course I have no idea what the heck that means so I do what anyone younger than 50 would do and I Google it.  Apparently those holes in the leaves that I always imagined was from a hungry caterpillar trying to up his body fat to cocoon for the winter and become a beautiful butterfly the next spring is actually just a fungus. So I then Google ‘caterpillars and cocoon’ only to discover they become butterflies in late summer. I am almost 28 and I honestly believed they hibernated like bears. I also never knew that trees could have a fungus. The solution to preventing this TERRIBLE incident is: ‘rake the leaves in the fall and destroy them’. Really? That’s it? This disease is making Martha’s life less vibrant and the solution is to ‘rake and destroy’? Even then it may return next year if you do not ‘rake and destroy’ the leaves from nearby trees. I, for one, think there has to be SOMETHING we can do about this! It is up to us as homeowners (okay, you as a home owner and me who lives in LA and will never be able to afford a home) to spread the word to ‘rake and destroy’ yearly!  I am thinking t-shirts. On the front  embroidered with leaves in fall colors: ‘RAKE AND DESTROY’ and on the back of the t-shirt embroidered in the same colors but written in the ‘Novia’ font (created especially for Martha Stewart Living Magazine in 2007) ‘KILL THE FUNGUS AND SAVE MARTHA’S TREES’. Raising the awareness is up to us, loyal readers!! Grab your rake and mulcher and get out there and show them how it’s done!!
